Master of Science Degree in Applied Breathing Sciences

Grading for courses is based on two requirements: (1) attendance and (2) examinations.

1. Attendance: Taking courses at the Graduate School of Breathing Sciences is about sharing knowledge and experience with colleagues, including other students and faculty. Attendance provides a fundamental and indispensable context for communication, a kind of experiential education that is difficult to objectively assess.

Live participation among student-colleagues, as well as among professors and students, is considered to be a key learning component of coursework. In addition to live interaction, there is ongoing live polling of students, including comments, questions, opinions, suggestions, and general feedback from students.

Students interested in earning an Honors grade (A) are required to attend class at least 50 percent of the scheduled time, in addition to performing well on examinations. Students missing class time are expected to listen to recordings of the session time missed.

2. Examinations: Each course (one unit, 15 hours of class time) is scheduled as two one-day sessions, two Saturdays or two Sundays, usually two weeks apart. There is ONE take-home examination given for each unit of credit, that is, one exam per 1-unit course, usually made available within two weeks following the last class session. Students are given at least one week to complete the examination. If the examination is not turned in within the allotted time, they receive a “No Credit” indication (NC) on their transcript until replaced with a grade once the examination is completed.

All examinations are “open book,” and consist of 10 to 30 short answer essay questions that focus on concepts, principles, applications, and critical thinking. Students complete examinations on the e-campus website, where exams can be conveniently edited and updated until ready for submission.
